Microsoft Office

4 Alternatives To Microsoft Office

If you have been using a computer or the Internet for your business, you are probably already familiar with Microsoft Office, which is a comprehensive suite of software that includes popular programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to help create and manage your work. You’ll also find various other features that can, for example, help improve your productivity and professionalism.

While subscriptions to Microsoft 365 start at just $6 per month (at the time of writing this), it’s probable you’ll need one of the more expensive plans, which offers more features.

But not every business has the money to commit to something like this – not at first, at least – so it’s good to know that there are free or less costly alternatives available, and this article looks at four of them.

Apache OpenOffice

Apache OpenOffice is a free, open-source office suite, which includes database management, drawing, presentation, spreadsheet, word processing, and more. It also supports a wide variety of file formats (including the current Microsoft ones), and it’s compatible with Windows, MacOS, Linux, and other operating systems.

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

Another great set of free office tools is the Google Suite, which includes a word processor (Google Docs), spreadsheet (Sheets), and presentation software (Slides).

You can access all three programs from any web browser (although they obviously recommend Chrome) and from most smartphones. They offer the ability to share documents so you can collaborate with others, and they integrate with Google services such as Calendar and Gmail, making it a great choice for businesses that want to stay within the Google ecosystem.

LibreOffice

LibreOffice is another alternative to Microsoft Office that has similar features and functions and compatibility. It also runs on several operating systems.

A distinguishing feature of LibreOffice is its comprehensive documentation, which makes it easier to learn the program in a short amount of time. Should the documentation be insufficient, there is also a community of users who help each other with problems and questions when using the program.

WPS Office

WPS Office is a lightweight, free office suite comprising Writer, Presentation, and Spreadsheets. It offers excellent compatibility with Microsoft Office’s file formats, and it includes a built-in PDF converter.

Note that WPS Office does have a premium version if you need additional features such as advanced collaboration tools and cloud storage.

Summary

Being open to new office solutions is a great way to save money and streamline your online business. With many of these tools being free, there is no reason why you shouldn’t give them a try. You might find that you don’t need to purchase Microsoft Office after all.
